Beverley Hammond, having sold her Johannesburg studio to relocate to Pretoria, opened The Beverley Hammond Dance School, the first Freestyle Studio in Pretoria, in May 1987. The first class consisted of 21 new pupils who were beginners without any knowledge of what Freestyle Dance was! By the end of the first month there were approximately 60 pupils. Social Ballroom and Latin American Teenage and Adult classes had by then also commenced. The rest is history. The studio now has approximately 300 pupils and hundreds have passed through the doors over the past 28 years.

Beverley Hammond (nee Adams) competed in Ballroom& Latin American with Dave Campbell from 1965.  During that time they won the South African Amateur Championships, were the first South African couple to represent South Africa at a World Latin American Championship being placed 7th. After they turned Professional and lived abroad for 2 years they came back to South Africa having been finalists in the World Cup Ten Dance Championships, The British Open, International and being four times undefeated South African Ballroom & Latin American Champions.

Beverley was one of the first teachers to qualify under the SADTA in Freestyle and from there, has worked up through the ranks to become an Examiner, International Adjudicator and Chairlady of the SADTA Gauteng Branch, and heads up Freestyle Dance in South Africa.

Many South African Freestyle titles have been won by the studio, including Darren Hammond being placed 2nd in the World Slow Dance Championships and 5th in the Men’s Freestyle World Championships, & 3rd in World Disco Dance Championships.

Ryan & Hayley Hammond the two older children have also followed in Beverley’s footsteps and won many South African titles in Freestyle as well as Latin American. They represented South Africa on many occasions at World Championships. Ryan with his former Partner Lindsey Muckle, are the undefeated British Latin Showdance Champions. Hayley and her partner Grant Simpson reached the Semi Final of the Under 21 British Latin American Championships. Darren with his former partner Kylee Brown are the undefeated Under 21 Dutch Open, World Amateur League Latin American Championship, and British Champions. Darren has since partnered up with Danish born Milla Lykke, and although they reside in Denmark, they are still representing South Africa. They reached the final in the British Amateur Rising Stars after only being together for 2 months.

Both Hayley and Ryan have won a South African Series of “Strictly Come Dancing” and Darren was runner up in the 2nd season of “So You think You Can Dance”.

Both Ryan & Hayley are qualified with the SADTA and are teachers and Choreographers in The Beverley Hammond Dance School. All of our teachers are qualified, experienced professionals who can take you all the way to the top, or just have fun with you if it is Social Dancing you are passionate about.  The studio boasts a very high standard of teaching with extensive International training and experience.

Hayley choreographed the winning number, for 2years in succession, of the American Dance Awards.

Hayley and Ryan have also been Choreographers on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ season 3.They have also both won ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ South Africa. We are very privileged to have them as part of our team at the Beverley Hammond Dance School.

A number of pupils trained in The Beverley Hammond Dance School have moved on to qualify and even become Examiners under the SADTA.
